Quinellas/Trifectas/First-Four

Postby ThaJuggla » Wed Jan 27, 2010 9:32 am

Just thought I would start a post in this board to get the ball rolling.

Anyone got any preferences on whether they would bet via Quinella, Trifecta or First-Four...

Personally I never liked the First-Four, because it relied too much on previous races wins, however if you actually win it, the payouts are generally awesome.

Again, Trifectas I didn't really like for similar reason...

Quinella tended to be my favourite. Box a few numbers together (say 3-4 horses) for the Quinella was my preference. Mind you, I only ever won once lol. About $20 or something haha.

Man its hard enough picking one horse that will place

but i do like trifecta bets when its just picking the top three and not picking the exact 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

I have heard of people winning big by targeting progressive trifecta jackpots when its got really big. The strategy is to go through the race or races and take out the horses which basically have no chance of making top 3. After that, you basically buy every possible trifecta combination of the horses that do have a chance.

Its a big gamble but actually can be a positive expected value gamble if the progressive jackpot is big enough.
A man should place a bet everyday otherwise he could be walking around lucky and not even know it.

@Wildwind: Do you understand the concept of "boxing" horses? i.e. choosing say 3 horses for example, and boxing them all in a trifecta, means that you are pretty much paying for all the combinations of 1st/2nd/3rd for those 3 horses.

bloody hell... didnt know that. there are so many exotic bets in horse racing... can i do this at TAB?

TIL about boxing horse bets  I think im gonna give this a go next time.

Boxing horse bets: With most exotic wagers you may also “box” the horses. This means they can come in any order. For example, if you bet a $2 Trifecta Box on horses 1-3-7, you win if the 1, 3 and 7 horse all finish in the top three, regardless of their order.

Using the above example, if 7-3-1 finish first, second and third, you win! You can “box” a wager, simply by picking the box bet of your choice. By boxing a wager you are essentially buying a ticket for all the different combinations for the horses you selected. So, in the above example the total wager cost would be $12, because there are 6 possible combinations.

I have never gambled on horses, but I do bet on Formula 1, and I used to make Quinella bets in F1 when they offered it. sucks how they don't anymore.

I know that the Melbourne Cup and shit is huge, so I'm actually keen to give it a go, I have a TAB account in NZ sitting there waiting for the next F1 season to start. I've seen people hang around TAB all day and keep betting on horses. I want to learn how its done so I can be a true degenerate gambler
